Shelby’s talents were recognized by the Vancouver School of Art in 1969, but acceptance for enrolment was one that she would decline. Challenges were seen as fertile ground for the cultivation of creativity and she used this innovative approach throughout all her endeavours. For ten years during the ‘90’s she built an interior design business in the Vancouver area and although, self-taught, she successfully served a clientele including Metro Town’s Tuscany Coffee House, Vancouver’s Keg Caesar, Cookies by George, Troll’s and Fleming Graphics.
Form and function, clients and deadlines gave way to the inevitable and in 2001 Shelby began studies at Ontario’s Dundas Valley School of Art and eventually the Vancouver Island Art School to bolster the years of design, observation and the brewing desire to make visual records of personal interpretations on the open canvas.
Subjects are generally a part of Shelby’s everyday encounters and are often caught briefly through her peripheral vision. The essence of these visions are layered with Shelby’s imagination, memories and her abstraction process using loose broad strokes, vivid colour schemes and her signature mark making.
Shelby has taken part in the Scattered Artists Studio Tour since 2010 and continues to work with this group of artists bringing Art to her neighbourhood. She is currently exhibiting her artwork at Art Atelier 546 in Victoria and since the Spring of 2014, she has shown at Inn at Laurel Point, Brentwood Bay Resort & Spa, the Victoria International Airport, Muse Winery, Cedar Hill Art Gallery and various coffee houses and restaurants in the Victoria area. In July of 2014 Shelby was invited to join the Gage Gallery Arts’ Collective of Oak Bay and is an Active Member of the Canadian Federation of Artists. Shelby’s artwork is held in private art collections in London, England; Seattle, WA; Greater Vancouver and Victoria.
